Formats that work: a downloadable PDF checklist or cheat sheet (5 to 10 pages, not a 100-page ebook), a free email mini-course (5 days, 1 lesson per day), a discount code or exclusive bonus, a comparison spreadsheet or calculator, or a curated 'starter kit' (e.g., 'My exact home gym setup under $500'). The common thread: they save the reader time or money in a measurable way.

Place the opt-in in 5 places minimum: header bar, end of every blog post, exit-intent popup (after 30 seconds, not on entry — entry popups annoy Americans), sidebar (for desktop), and a dedicated landing page. Send a newsletter once per week, same day, same time. Consistency builds the inbox provider trust that keeps your emails out of the Promotions tab. The 80/20 rule: 80% of your emails should provide value with no direct sale (a useful tip, a curated link round-up, a personal story, a tool recommendation), and 20% should be direct affiliate promotions (a product launch, a Black Friday roundup, a deep-dive review).

Avoid clickbait and ALL CAPS — they trigger spam filters and erode trust.

Track open rates (aim for 35%+), click rates (aim for 3%+), and unsubscribe rate (under 0.5% per send). If open rates drop below 25%, your subject lines are weak or your list needs cleaning. Remove subscribers who haven't opened in 90 days — a smaller engaged list always outperforms a large dead one with affiliate networks and email deliverability.
